Die PubCon 2010 in Las Vegas, (8. – 11. November 2010) lasse ich vermutlich ausfallen, hier würde ich eher mal zum Affiliate Summit (9. – 11. Januar 2011, auch in Las Vegas) gehen. Und dann mal sehen, was sich in der Zwischenzeit dann noch kurzfristig ergibt.

Und da ich ja absoluter Fan von lokalen Networking-Veranstaltungen bin, ist für mich das Webmaster Meeting in Suderbruch in der Nähe von Hannover (ca. 30 Minuten von hier aus) auch absoluter Pflichttermin. In den letzten Jahren noch überwiegend für Adult Webmaster (daher auch der Name „AWM24“ – „Adult Webmaster Meeting“), wird das Meeting nun ein wenig mehr für den „Mainstream“ geöffnet – im letzten Jahr richtig gut besucht waren u.a. auch die Vorträge (ich habe dort zum Thema Blog Optimierung gesprochen).

Organisator Matthias war so freundlich, und hat mir freundlicherweise fünf Freikarten für das Webmaster Meeting zugesagt – wer also für umsonst dorthin möchte, braucht lediglich einen kleinen Blogpost schreiben und das Webmaster Meeting sowie diesen Post hier verlinken (denkt ans trackback’en) oder den folgenden Tweet (bitte unverändert, sonst kann ich diese nicht tracken) veröffentlichen:

Konferenzen & Events Q3+4 2010 + Gewinnspiel ist ein Beitrag von Bastian Grimm.

Daher vorab einen riesen Dank an Alexander von 121WATT für die Lastminute SMX-Karte sowie das Party Ticket. Ich habe dem Alexander ein paar Vorschläge für Seminarthemen der 121WATT zukommen lassen, genauer ging es um die folgenden Fragestellungen:

• Ideen für 121WATT Seminarthemen?
• Was ist im Augenblick spannend?
• Wo sind bei Euch und in den Unternehmen die Fragestellungen zum Thema Online Marketing?
• Wer sind die besten Referenten?

Meine Antworten dazu finden sich hier.

Die Konferenz selbst war – mit 850 Teilnehmern – sehr anständig besucht und das obwohl parallel dazu die wohl größte Online-Marketing-Konferenz (SES NY) in den USA stattfindet – respekt. Wie ich schon vorher erwartet hatte, positioniert sich die deutsche Ausgabe der SMX sehr in Richtung „Corporate“ – ich habe bisher keine Veranstaltung mit einem höheren Anzahl von Anzugträgern ausmachen können Wobei das keinesfalls negativ zu verstehen ist, denn auch hier bedient die SMX eine Zielgruppe, die insbesondere in Deutschland diese Art von Veranstaltung in jedem Fall braucht.

Inhaltlich haben sich in meinen Augen insbesondere das „Webmasters on the Roof All-Star Panel“ sowie am zweiten Tag „Wie finden Suchmaschinen Spam – Mustererkennung durch Suchmaschinen“ gelohnt – hier gab es zwischen den Zeilen doch einige nette Tipps. Außerdem absolut erwähnenswert war die „PPC Blackhat und wie Sie Ihre Kampagnen davor schützen“ Session mit meinem Partner-in-Crime Evert – sehr, sehr cool Allerdings muss man auf der anderen Seite hier auch sehen, dass z.B. eine Session, die ich nur kurz besucht habe, eine reine Werbeveranstaltung war (das sah Pascal offenbar auch so) und wiederrum eine andere Session qualitativ eher schlecht war (wie auch Sistrix kritisch anmerkt).

Dennoch – alles in allem eine Runde Sache, insbesondere auch das Catering muss man hier nochmals positiv herausstellen, mit Abstand das beste Konferenz-Essen, was ich in diesem Jahr gesehen habe! Die international aufgestellte Affiliate Marketing Konferenz A4U Expo bietet wieder zwei Tage lang ein vollgepacktes Konferenzprogramm in dem auch SEO absolut nicht zu kurz kommt und das Ganze somit quasi zur Pflichtveranstaltung macht. Mittlerweile ist auch die vorläufige Agenda (Tag 1, Tag 2) verfügbar und ich habe mal einige Highlights rausgesucht:

Auf dem Papier absolut umwerfend und ich bin mir sicher, dass die Show wieder ein Highlight in diesem vollgepackten Konferenzjahr wird – daher meine Empfehlung: Unbedingt noch bis zum 02. April 2010 registrieren – aktuell gibt’s noch Early Bird Tickets mit 100 EUR Ermäßigung auf den regulären Preis!

Ich werde auf jeden Fall dort sein – vorher steht bei mir die EWT auf Mallorca auf dem Programm, die ich ein wenig verlängere und somit dann mehr oder weniger direkt von Malle nach München weiterfliege – so macht’s Spass

A4U Europe 2010 Sneak Peak ist ein Beitrag von Bastian Grimm.

Interessant finde ich auf jeden Fall die Wahl des Veranstaltungsorts: Das Hotel am Müggelsee – quasi sowas von am Ende der Welt, dass man keine Chance hat, zu „fliehen“ – zwingt einen quasi vor Ort zu bleiben, was sicher die Intensität des Events nochmal aufwertet – quasi rund um die Uhr „SEO Talk“. Nicht schlecht, wenn gleich vielleicht auch etwas sommerlicheres Wetter und / oder eine Verlegung um einige Wochen in den Sommer hinein dem ganzen nicht schaden würden – so könnte man auch den Müggelsee ein wenig mehr genießen. Das Hotel selbst echt witzig – Martin nennt es den Plattenbau-Charme, Pascal wird an seine Jugendherbergszeit erinnert – eignet sich ansonsten hervorragend für den Event, wenn gleich auch einige Wege unglaublich lang sind und das „ich schau mal eben zur Bar rüber“ abends locker ein bis zwei Stunden dauern kann.

Die Unmenge an parallelen Sessions übertrifft vom Umfang bei weitem alles, was ich von anderen Veranstaltungen kenne. Sicher cool für den geneigten Zuhörer, weil er eigentlich immer etwas findet, was von Interesse ist – auf der anderen Seite könnte man dann auch wieder argumentieren, dass zu viel Auswahl auch nicht gut ist. Zur Anteilname an den Sessions bzw. dem Niveau haben Stefan und Scarlett eigentlich schon alles gesagt – dem gibt es also nichts hinzuzufügen.

Alles in allem hat es echt Spass gemacht – denn insbesondere das Abendprogramm (z.B. mit United Four, aber auch der Pre-Event am Freitag) waren schon wirklich lustig (vielleicht legt man den OM Stammtisch nächstes Mal besser direkt ins Hotel?) – wenn gleich ich aus Erzählungen vom letzten Jahr doch ein wenig etwas anderes erwartet habe (also lag ich mit meiner Prognose doch gar nicht so schlecht )

Etwas anstrengend fand ich die Tatsache, dass das Hotel von der Kapazität her leider bei weitem nicht für jedermann Zimmer zur Verfügung hatte – organisatorisch schon sehr ärgerlich, allerdings hat unserer Bus/Campingmobil dafür umso mehr gerockt und selbst zu nächtlicher Stunde gab es hervorragende Sandwiches von Kochgroßmeister Marcel, einfach delicious

Weitere Meinungen zur Campixx gibt’s dann unter anderem noch bei: Pip, Astrid, Andrea, Gerald, Thomas, Julian, Alexander, Martin sowie hier, hier, hier, hier und hier.

Für mich war es bereits die siebte Veranstaltung dieses Jahr und so langsam wird’s Zeit für eine Auszeit. Dieser Auszeit fällt auf jeden Fall die SMX in München zum Opfer, dort werde ich diesmal nicht dabei sein – weiter geht’s dann erst im Mai, ab dem 12.05. mit der EWT auf Mallorca und direkt im Anschluss ab dem 18.05. mit der A4Ueurope in München.

The guys of Microsoft did a nice wrap-up of the 2nd days keynote by Bryan Eisenberg titled “21 secrects of top converting” websites – really worth a read. And – unfortunately I was not able to attend this one – but there was a sponsored session called Link Building Methods and Risks at SES London by link building guru Jim Boykin – go and check out the live coverage over here.

The first session I’ve been to, was called Social Media 101 by Lisa Myers of VerveSearch. Lisa got a solo presentation (which apparently was the first time SES did this kind of format – but honestly, I liked it – it’s always a problem if you just have 10 or even 20 minutes speaking time, there’s no way to cover something really in-detail) which was quite interesting. Even though presenting all basics in Social Media it was a great overview and good start for companies not being in Social Media already.

• And you really should have a look at “Is Social Media a Fad?” – it’s worth watching it!

Another session which was really interesting was targeting Real Time SEO – especially focussing on Google News. Andrew Girdwood did a great wrap-up of that session. Especially Brent Payne of Tribune provided some really useful insights, not only but including:

• Google has massively slowed down how fast a 301 redirect will pass the relevance from a changed G-news URL. His guess is that this is done to prevent spamming the news index.
• Brent also states that the Tribune can confirm that Google is still pretty bad in finding the original source of a news story. Especially when the source is just a reference within a paragraph.

SES London 2010, Day 2 – Quick Recap ist ein Beitrag von Bastian Grimm.

London is always a great place to travel, I like the city but even more I do look forward to the event and especially meeting some friends and colleagues from the industry. Most times you just meet at these conferences or the events around it which often sucks because it’s not much time to talk. Luckily my SES schedule this year looks quite relaxed so there is going to be a lot of time for this. I think there are still a lot of people in online marketing who don’t understand about the value of these events – because it’s so unbelievably important to network and just get connected to others doing what you do. Sometime you’ll need something and this is going to be so much easier with a big network!

Barcelona is – I guess – going to be quite the opposite. Last year’s event was really one of my conference highlights in 2009 (I spoke twice that time) and this year I even do have three panels / workshops to be on (event schedule).

Starting out on Saturday morning with a SEO Site-Clinique style workshop which I’ll be doing together with Christoph Cemper and continuing on Sunday with a session dedicated to link building strategies and another one called the SEO Expert Q&A – on both I’ll be moderating. I guess this is really going to be fun.

And if you’re attending to one or the other event please come by and say hi! Looking forward to it!

EDIT: In case you’re wondering why this comes a little late – because of the amazing wifi at SES (which doesn’t work 99% of the time) I couldn’t put this post online yesterday. First day of SES was pretty good, especially one session with Rob Kerry, Dave Naylor and Richard Baxter was interesting – they were discussing various industry specific optimization tactics and at some point got to geo targeting domain paths (on gTLDs) vs. sub domains vs. ccTLDs – very interesting stuff

Los geht’s für mich Anfang Februar mit der active lounge in Hamburg. Veranstaltung von der active performance GmbH im Club H1 in Hamburg. Wird sicher nett, die Teilnehmerliste schaut mit rund 530 Teilnehmern schon gut voll aus.

SES London | 15. bis 19. Februar 2010, London
Die erste SES des Jahres 2010 findet in London statt – ich werde allerdings für nur drei Tage dort sein (16. – 18.), da es danach direkt weiter geht nach Barcelona.

Direkt im Anschluss gehts für mich nach Barcelona in die Sonne (zumindest hoffe ich, dass es ein wenig davon gibt – auch um die Jahreszeit), um dort den SEO Track zweiten Ausgabe des Barcelona Summits zu moderieren. TBS war für mich DAS Adult-Event im letzten Jahr und dieses Jahr wirds nochmal größer und vor allem besser. Mehr zu den SEO-Sessions demnächst.

SEMSEO & PubCon | 26. Februar, Hannover
Die zugehörige SEMSEO Konferenz findet – wie in den Jahren zuvor auch – von 9.00 bis 18.00 Uhr statt, danach geht’s zum Networken in die HBX Stadtbrauerei zur ABAKUS Pubkonferenz.

SEO Campixx 2k10 | 13. bis 14. März, Berlin
Letztes Jahr war ich nicht dort – und offenbar einiges verpasst – so sagte man zumindest hinterher Daher werde ich dieses Mal auch auf der Campixx sein – wenngleich mich die Hotelsituation ziemlich nervt. Aber da wird sich hoffentlich noch eine Unterkunft finden.

SMX München | 23. bis 24. Märze 2010, München
Die SMX steht aktuell zwar auf der Liste – allerdings bin ich mir noch nicht sicher, ob ich mich “hintraue“… Zumindest angedacht, mal wieder vorbei zu schauen.

A4U Expo Europe | 18. bis 19. Mai, München
Nachdem wir ja im letzten Jahr Amsterdam gerockt haben, findet dies diesjährige, europäische Ausgabe der A4U in Müchen statt. Meiner Meinung nach ein Pflichttermin, d.h. ich werde wohl auch dort sein

In diesem Jahr setzt der Veranstalter auf ein noch stärkeres Konferenzprogramm und hat sogar den einen oder anderen SEO-Professional für die EWT gewinnen können. So werden u.a. Prof. Dr. Mario Fischer am Donnerstag, oder Christoph Cemper am Freitagmorgen sprechen.

Ich werde am Freitag – ab 12.30 Uhr (im Raum “Palais Sachsen Coburg V“) – die SEO Website Klinik moderieren. In diesem Workshop werden wir uns verschiedenen Seiten der Workshop-Teilnehmer anschauen und entsprechende Tipps & Tricks zu Optimierungsmöglichkeiten aufzeigen. Solltet ihr also auch auf der EWT unterwegs sein, schaut gern mal vorbei.

SEO Website-Klinik auf der EWT 2009 ist ein Beitrag von Bastian Grimm.

Am Mittwoch begann für mich der Tag mich einem relaxten Frühstück mit Sebastian (der u.a. für das Design dieser Seite verantwortlich ist), um das eine oder andere anstehende Projekt durchzuplanen – sehr cool, danke für deine Zeit. Danach ging es dann direkt zur dmexco. Der Einlass, zumindest für mich, echt entspannt und reibungslos – keine drei Minuten und ich war drin, bei der letzten OMD hat das ewig gedauert. Die Halle fand ich reichlich unspektakulär, der Außenbereich war nett und das Wetter hat weitgehend mitgespielt, so dass man sich dort wirklich gut unterhalten konnte. Der Tag, zugepflastert mit Terminen im 30 Minutentakt sowie keine fünf Schritte ohne ein bekanntes Gesicht neigte sich relativ schnell dem Ende.

Widmen wir uns also direkt dem Abendprogramm: Kick-off mit diversen Getränken bei active-performance sowie IPT & TRG – ein guter Start in den Abend. Nach kurzes Stop-over im Hotel direkt weiter zum Abendessen (kudos an Marcel für den Restauranttipp – wer Lust auf gutes Steak hat, sollte in Köln wirklich mal im El Chango vorbeischauen) und im Anschluss dann direkt das nächste Highlight: Der OMClub im LOOM – what a blast! Großer Dank an Organisationstalent Scarlett – einfach richtig, richtig gut!

Der Donnerstag war dann recht kurz und schmerzlos – einige Termine erledigt und dann direkt zurück in die Heimat. Danke für die coolen Gespräche, u.a. mit Nils, BB, Evert, Andre, Thomas und allen, die ich vergessen habe. Grüße auch noch an Kalle von ayud0

After a freaking 28 hours door-to-door travelling (Hannover – Frankfurt – Chicago – Las Vegas) I was completely done for the day but we still ended up in the bar of Treasure Island, hanging there until approx. 3am. The TI – as a location for a conference hotel was OK – nothing really impressive but a solid pricing and a nice bar were you could meet PubCon attendees all the time. So pretty good!

Tuesday:
First day of the conference started for me around 8am – still being completely jetlagged but hey… Getting the badge was easy – no queue, very short waiting time (someone told me they send the badges by mail, at least to every attendee from the States – I didn’t get one upfront). After a short breakfast (the American style – cookies and other sweets…) the event kicked off with a keynote at nine by Shawn Rorick who is the Director of Marketing for Cirque du Soleil. In my opinion day one was pretty low when you only consider the sessions, but hey – conferences are for networking right?

Wednesday:
Same story – a complete hangover from the day before forced me to skip the breakfast – regarding the sessions, I think the highlights were the keynote by George Wright of Blendtec (I think most of you know about the IPhone and the blender, right? If not, just check www.willitblend.com) as well as the “Local and Mobile Search” session and “Competitive Intelligence : Know Thy Competitor Well” – good stuff. Other than that I’ve mostly been to site review sessions, it’s always great fun. In the evening SEOmoz.org had its werewolf thingy going – it was… well, freaky.

Thursday:
If you only had a look at the agenda this would be the “must-attend” day. And it was just great. I followed those sessions over the day:

• Linkfluence : How To Buy Links With Maximum Juice and Minimum Risk
• Top Secret Tools of The Trade

After that, there was the site review session with Matt Cutts, Greg Boser and Nathan Buggia – it was unbelievable funny. It’s so ridiculous what some people are willing to show off. Wow… for everybody who attended: “hotels.biz” (no you don’t get a link to this one…)!

The evening was probably also one of the best – we we’re hanging at the WebmasterRadio.FM Search Bash party at RAIN Night Club at Palms. DJ of the evening was Paul Oakenfold – great sound and a pretty nice show. A blast! After that we switched over to the Venetian where PurposeInc had its poker tournament going on. It was a hard one, believe me. There are some pics over there…

Friday:
The “classic” PubCon day – funnily it was at the “Hofbräuhaus” Las Vegas. Really nothing to impress a German guy with but hey – at least the beer was good. However the location was pretty lame – too big and way too loud. So we spent a lot of time out of the building. But anyway, there were some nice talks going on. After the event was finally over we switched to the TI bar again were all the crowd was hanging anyway. I really enjoyed it, especially partying with Chris, Michael & Francois – great times.

Summary:
In general I think the event was absolutely worth the trip – of course it’s hard to measure the impact of a conference but yeah, I got a pretty good feeling and some nice ideas out of it. Unfortunately the event seems to be suffering from the entire crisis currently going on – not sure what the official attendee numbers are but it felt emptier compared to the years before.
The German-(speaking) fraction was also not too big this year – if I am not totally wrong it must be something around ten or even less (at least I remember Marcus, Pascal, Rudi, Ralf, Ralf and yeah some more…)

I also spent the weekend there – I mean Las Vegas is always just great: Gambling, the shows and of course the great nightlife – I really liked it, again. This said: See you next year at PubCon!

On a side note: There will be a European PubCon next year, the classic style (just one day) in London, and also another one in Austin, Texas. I’ll try to be at least in London, I think it’ll be fun.

And I’ll have some pictures online on the weekend – for now my cell doesn’t want to work with the laptop… sorry.

Anyway – I left office today, heading for an all-day workshop tomorrow and after the weekend I’ll be leaving for PubCon in beautiful Las Vegas, Nevada. Yeah – I’m really looking forward to it especially because I missed last years event because of my birthday and my girl fiend wouldn’t let me go; right… This time the official conference hotel will be the Treasure Island. I’ve never been in there so I’m really curious on how it’ll be there. Normally I’m a huge fan of the Wynn – but hey, you have to try something new sometimes, right?

The conference schedule looks nice (it can be found here) and I’m really looking forward to meet friends and business partners over there. Let’s see how many Germans will be there this year. Not sure but I guess seoFM with mediadonis will be on air live from the conference – so that’ll be a good chance to do some counting.

The good news is, this year’s conference will not be at the Berlin exhibition center like it was last year but they now moved it over to the Alexander Platz (Congress Center, Alexanderstr. 11, 10178 Berlin) which is just like five minutes away from our office – as you can see here on Google Maps. And the official congress hotel (Radisson SAS – which is really great by the way) is next door to our office.

In general there are five different tracks available: Development, Design & User Experience, Strategy & Business Models and Marketing & Community. In parallel there are some workshops available as well as some sponsored sessions. The full conference schedule can be found here.

And because partying in Berlin is always good there are a lot of other events surrounding the expo – nice overviews are available here and there.

UPDATE: I’ll be at the LateCrunch party (by TechCrunch) for sure.

So if you’re in Berlin this week (not matter if you attend to the Expo or not) drop me a line – would be great to meet some known faces

For me the day started with a pretty damn early flight (I left Tegel at 6.50) so that I arrived round about 9.30 – some time for a little breakfast (which was nice btw) and then the day kicked off with the keynote by Chris DiBona who basically teasered all the session that took place during the day.

I continued with a Geo session by Jens Trapp who basically introduced the Google Maps API (nothing really new over there) and how to implement it. After that he continued with the nicer stuff like Google Maps API for Flash, Static Maps API as well as Google Mapplets API. Some nice stuff – worth having a look.

After a short break Ian Fette presented the Google Chrome browser – obviously nothing really new but hey, nice to have a short overview on that as well. Things like the incognito mode have been discussed as well as the possibility to provide an OpenSearch description document (OSDD file) to enable Google Chrome to include a site in the list of search engines in the browser. If you have not already done it – do it, really not much work but looks nice

After the lunch break (greetings to Markus “Affiliateboy” Kellermann and Kim “Leuk” Engels – was really great hanging out with you guys!) I continued with the session called YouTube API: Build YOUR YouTube (Advanced) by Jean-Laurent Wotton who basically flew through all important things regarding the YouTube API – really impressive! In my opinion the best session of the day, very much information – from basic to very advanced, just nice. Especially the chromeless player as well the AJAX search API for YouTube.

The last session of the day was Android (Advanced) by Mike Jennings which was informative but nothing more… Chris DiBona also presented an Android mobile (the G1 by T-Mobile) live on stage (in his warp-up session), looks interesting but in my opinion it’s going to be a lot of work to compete with Apples iPhone.

Bottom-line: A well organized event (entry was free, by the way), nice & informative sessions as well as good catering – I’ll be back next year!

Anyway, just some very short things and thoughts about OMD 08: Besides of not having the chance to walk 20 metres without meeting a known face it was really nice. I started on Tuesday evening with the “metaapes Affiliate Stammtisch” which was really nice, loungy atmosphere, nice drinks and a lot of known faces – so all in all nice networking. After that (must have been sometime around midnight) Max and I checked out the CJ party for some more cocktails After staying for another our we finally ended up at the Doubleclick party which took place at Nachtresidenz – great fun over there, nice music and again some nice drinks, ladies, etc.

Next morning was nice, besides of the “not-so-good” breakfast at Holiday Inn and the really annoying and way too overcrowded sign-in process I had some really great meetings during the day over at OMD and of course a lot of fun. After some serious business we finally started partying again – directly at OMD. Most of the SEOs were having some nice drinks at SEO|maxx, we later also visited the Zanox party and some other booths I really do not remember. Around 7.30 it was time to head over to OMClub (guess what? Yes… party again). Of course we took the amazing stretch limo provided by Bert Wollersheimer. After some snacks the show kicked off – what a freaking blast. To be honest I really do not want to remember what happened over there in detail… but it was just an amazing party. I guess (not sure though…) we’ve been there till around four (cheers Chris) and then also had some drinks at another club. WOW – as you might have expected the following day was really freaking hard. Even though I was told not to look too bad (hahaha, nice…) I didn’t feel really good until around lunch. I finished the day with some more meetings and then finally headed back to Berlin – back at home I felt asleep right away… I’m going to catch some more sleep now – it’s gonna be a long day tomorrow, flying in for Google Developer Day 2008 conference in Munich. For me, this year’s kick-off will already be (as always) the “metaapes Affiliate Stammtisch” (this year taking place at the beautiful Restaurant Tußmann; already booked out) on the 16th of September, starting at 19.00h. Besides attending to the conference both days I’ll continue partying on the 17th at “Randolf’s OMClub Party” (taking place at Les Halles) starting around 20.00h which will be a blast! Not sure if I’m also staying for the evening of the 18th – good ideas are always welcome
If you’re there (and I bet you do…) just drop me a line or give me a call – I’ll be happy to meet and have some coffee (…or beer)!

I was invited by the team from adultpartners.eu to speak in front of a selection of their affiliates and webmasters to present a wrap up covering the most important parts of SEO in general. Because the audience was very mixed up I had to cover pretty much all important aspects – on-page optimizations as well as off-page topics.

In case of on-page I basically mentioned mark-up related things, CTR improvements as well as some more general things like problems with flash and JavaScript. After a short break of 15 minutes I continued with off-page stuff basically focusing only one links and where to get them in general. And finally after the lunch-break which we spent outside sitting in the sun having some really great pasta I continued with some more things like RSS feeds, XML sitemaps as well as introducing the Google Webmaster Tools and more general SEO tools like Yahoo! Site Explorer or link queries for Exalead.
