Just wanna say “Hi” from Seattle. Arrived yesterday evening after 14 hours of flight (from Berlin to London and then over to Seattle). Till now everything went really smoothly. I’m staying at the Seattle Marriott Waterfront which is pretty nice. After a short refreshment I went up to the Bell Harbor International Conference Center where the SMX Advanced conference will be held. Seems to be very well organized (as always) – I picked up my badge and after a short break headed over to the first party: SMX Presents “In The Park” with Microsoft – cool location, nice drinks and finger food. A promising start – let’s see how to conference will be. I’m gonna have breakfast now ![]()

Morning everybody. Just wanna do a quick summary of day 1, re:publica 08: Additionally to the keynote I also attend to some other sessions but to be honest none of them is really worth mentioning, but anyway, here we go: weiterlesen
re:publica 08 keynote: “Nützliches vergessen”

The re:publica 08 keynote was really interesting: Viktor Mayer-Schönberger (of Harvard University) talked about reminding and forgetting information (“Nützliches vergessen”). As you might imagine he mentioned Google a few times, especially when it comes to storing and analyzing search queries Google is one or even the most powerful company to do so. weiterlesen
SEO Recap – Feb 7, 2008 (Part 2)

Some more search news published Feb 7, 2008:
The problem with pagination on CPM ad driven websites
CPM revenue is if course based on PVs (page views) because more page views also mean more ad views. But from a SEO perspective splitting up pages is not a very good idea because of various reasons: Link popularity (you’ll be only backlinked to the first page of the article) will only be build for one page, unique titles & metas will be very difficult to create, etc. This very interesting article is definitely worth reading.
Working conditions of people working in SEO
A very interesting German poll gathering some information on SEO working conditions (how long do you work, do you work freelance or as company employee, etc.). If you’re in SEO go vote.
SEO Recap – Feb 7, 2008

I stumbled upon a few interesting articles definitely worth reading:
- Link title attribute vs. image alt tags: Which is better?
Interesting article on ranking impacts of the two probably most known element attributes. - How to avoid and elude Google’s Sandbox?
A common problem especially when ranking new pages is the Google sandbox. Sandboxing can happen for example when the page can not be categorized or there are to few inbound and / or authoritative back links. - Why storing URLs with truncated trailing slashes is an utterly idiocy
Great summary on “invalid” URLs because of missing trailing slashes and why these URLs can damage page popularity.
That’s all for today…
How many links on a single page?
31.01.2008, 20:15 Uhr · Abgelegt in: Blog, SEO
I did some research for a client on how many links should be used per page or on a site-map because I only knew about Google saying not to use more then hundred links at once: weiterlesen
NOYDIR: No Yahoo directory description
30.01.2008, 09:26 Uhr · Abgelegt in: Blog, SEO
As I mentioned yesterday, there is a possibility to prevent Google from using the ODP description - and this also works for Yahoo! search results. But sometimes this is not the only source where Yahoo! gets it’s (editorial) SERP snippets from: In many cases they’re using their descriptions from the Yahoo! directory. So its kind of a consistent further development to support a tag (value) which prevents Yahoo! from doing so. weiterlesen
NOODP: Prevent Google ODP descriptions
29.01.2008, 00:20 Uhr · Abgelegt in: Blog, SEO
Do you sometimes ask yourself why Google displays a search result summary you neither have created (by using the meta description tag) nor can it be found on the page itself? This happens because Google then decides to use the description from it’s Open Directory Project (short: “ODP”) – most likely because in Google’s opinion this snippet is more relevant then the available meta data and / or the page content itself. weiterlesen
MetaTags Plug-in for Firefox
25.01.2008, 02:13 Uhr · Abgelegt in: Blog, Technik
Everybody who’s often dealing and working with meta tags knows how really frustrating it can be if you have to look into the page source and try to find the meta tag your looking for. The Firefox plug-in which make things way easier (after having installed the plug-in it’s just pressing ALT + M) is called MetaTags, created by Victor Porton. Its just this simple shortcut and you’ll see all the relevant information at a glance – amazing plug-in!
Customize Google SERPs
24.01.2008, 09:09 Uhr · Abgelegt in: Blog, Technik
I was really annoyed by constantly having to count ranking positions at Google SERPs and because of that I was searching for some kind of a plug-in to do that for me. I stumbled upon a few Greasemonkey (which is really cool by the way) scripts but all of them were massively slowing down my laptop. weiterlesen
